Modelling healthy behaviour

How managers set the real standard for wellbeing by modelling healthy boundaries and self-care, not just talking about it.

Your team notices what you do far more than what you say - the habits you model set the real standard for wellbeing on your team.

What it is

Modelling healthy behaviour means visibly practising the boundaries, self-care, and help-seeking you want your team to feel safe doing themselves. If you send emails at midnight, skip lunch, or never take leave, your team will quietly absorb that this is expected, no matter what your wellbeing policy says.

Signs to notice

  • You regularly work through breaks or send after-hours messages
  • You rarely, if ever, take your full leave allowance
  • You downplay your own stress or struggles in front of the team
  • Your team apologises for taking breaks, leave, or sick days
  • You haven't mentioned or used Cleared Mind yourself, even informally

What helps

  • Take your lunch breaks and leave visibly, and talk about it normally - "I'm off next week, recharging."
  • Avoid sending non-urgent messages outside working hours, or use scheduled send if you work differently to your team.
  • Speak openly, in professional terms, about managing your own stress: "This week's been full-on, so I'm blocking time to reset."
  • Mention Cleared Mind as something you use or would use yourself, not just something you refer others to.
  • Set and respect your own boundaries consistently, so your team learns boundaries are safe to hold too.
  • Celebrate rest and recovery, not just hustle and output, in team conversations.
  • Notice if your own habits are quietly setting an unsustainable pace, and adjust deliberately.

When to reach out for help

If you realise your own habits have been modelling overwork or avoidance, it's worth a check-in with yourself - and with a Cleared Mind counsellor if you're not sure how to shift the pattern.
