Retrenchment Readiness Check

A practical checklist that shows how prepared a member is if they face retrenchment, dismissal or the end of a contract, across money, documents, rights, work search and support.

  1. I have savings or support to cover at least one month of essential expenses.

  2. I have a written 'survival budget' showing my essential monthly costs.

  3. I have copies of my employment contract, recent payslips and my latest IRP5.

  4. My payslip shows UIF deductions, and I know my employer must give me a UI-19 form when I leave.

  5. I know that retrenchment requires consultation and that severance pay is usually at least one week's pay per completed year of service.

  6. I know that a dismissal dispute usually has to be referred to the CCMA or bargaining council within a short time limit.

  7. I know what happens to my retirement fund and medical aid if I leave, and I will get advice before withdrawing anything.

  8. I know which debts I would need to talk to creditors or a debt counsellor about.

  9. My CV is up to date.

  10. I have told a few people in my network that I may be looking for work.

  11. I have talked with my household or family about a plan if income drops.

  12. I have someone to talk to about how this is affecting me.
