Leading through change

How managers can lead their teams through uncertainty and organisational change with honesty and calm.

2 min read · Awareness resource · Reviewed 2026-09-15

Change is one of the biggest stressors people face at work - how you lead through it can either steady your team or add to their anxiety.

What it is

Leading through change means guiding your team through restructuring, new processes, leadership changes, or uncertainty in a way that acknowledges the emotional impact, not just the logistics. Even positive change can feel destabilising, and people cope with uncertainty very differently.

Signs to notice

  • Increased rumours, speculation, or anxiety in team conversations
  • A spike in questions about job security or "what's really happening"
  • Resistance to new processes that seems out of proportion
  • Reduced productivity or engagement during the transition period
  • Team members seeking reassurance more frequently than usual

What helps

  • Communicate early and often, even when you don't have all the answers - "here's what I know, here's what I don't yet" builds trust.
  • Acknowledge the emotional impact of change explicitly: "I know this is unsettling, and that's a normal reaction."
  • Create space for questions and concerns, rather than only delivering information one-way.
  • Keep routines and check-ins consistent where possible - stability in small things helps people cope with bigger uncertainty.
  • Watch for individuals who seem to be struggling more than others, and check in with them privately.
  • Be honest about what you can and can't control, and focus energy on what the team can influence.
  • Look after your own capacity to lead calmly - your team will take cues from how you're coping.
