Supporting return-to-work

Practical steps for managers to support a team member's smooth return to work after mental health-related leave.

2 min read · Awareness resource · Reviewed 2026-09-15

Coming back to work after time off for mental health reasons can feel daunting - a thoughtful welcome from you can shape how that transition goes.

What it is

Supporting return-to-work means helping a team member reintegrate smoothly after an absence related to their mental health, whether that was a few days or a longer period of leave. It involves practical planning, clear communication, and ongoing check-ins, rather than assuming things will simply go back to "normal" on day one.

Signs to notice

  • The team member seems anxious about how colleagues will react
  • Uncertainty about workload expectations on return
  • Avoidance of certain tasks, people, or triggers linked to their absence
  • Fatigue or difficulty concentrating in the early days back
  • Reluctance to ask for adjustments even when struggling

What helps

  • Have a private welcome-back conversation before their first day, if possible, to agree on any adjustments.
  • Ask what they'd like colleagues to know, if anything - and respect their choice to share little or nothing.
  • Consider a phased return: reduced hours, lighter workload, or fewer meetings in the first week or two.
  • Check in regularly but briefly, without making them feel watched or singled out.
  • Revisit the plan after a few weeks - what's working, what needs adjusting.
  • Keep communication with HR and Cleared Mind coordinated so the team member isn't repeating their story to multiple people.

When to reach out for help

If the return doesn't go as planned, or the team member seems to be struggling again, reach out to Cleared Mind for a check-in or refer them back for further support rather than waiting for things to escalate.
