Caregiver support journey
A guided journey of practical and emotional support for members caring for a sick, ageing or disabled loved one.
Caring for someone you love can be one of the most meaningful things you ever do, and one of the most exhausting. This journey exists to make sure you are cared for too.
What it is
The caregiver support journey is a series of resources and sessions for members who are looking after a family member with a chronic illness, disability, ageing-related needs or a mental health condition. Caregiving often happens quietly, alongside a full-time job, with little recognition of the toll it takes. This journey covers the practical side, such as finding respite and navigating healthcare systems, and the emotional side, including grief, guilt and burnout, that so often go unspoken in caregiving roles.
Signs to notice
- Constant tiredness that does not lift with rest
- Neglecting your own health appointments, sleep or meals
- Feeling resentment towards the person you are caring for, followed by guilt
- Withdrawing from friends, hobbies or anything unrelated to caregiving
- A sense of grief for the relationship or life you had before, even while the person is still alive
- Feeling invisible, unsupported or like no one understands what your days involve
What helps
- Naming caregiver burnout as real and valid, not selfish or ungrateful
- Building in small, non-negotiable pockets of rest or activity that are just for you
- Asking for and accepting practical help from family, friends or community, even in small pieces
- Looking into respite care or day programmes so you are not carrying every hour alone
- Connecting with other caregivers who understand the specific weight of this role
- Allowing space for complicated feelings, love, grief, frustration and guilt can all be true at once
- Keeping your own medical and mental health checks up to date, not just the person you care for
When to reach out for help
Please reach out if you feel constantly overwhelmed, physically unwell from stress, or if you notice signs of depression such as persistent low mood, hopelessness or loss of interest in things you used to enjoy. Caregiver burnout is a recognised and serious risk, and support exists specifically for people in your position, not only for the person you are caring for.
