Anger management skills
A skills-based programme to help members understand their anger and respond to it in healthier, safer ways.
Anger is a normal, human emotion, and it can also become something that damages relationships, work and health when it is not understood or managed well. This programme is here to help you work with it, not against it.
What it is
Anger management skills is a structured programme that helps members understand what triggers their anger, how it shows up in the body, and how to respond in ways that protect relationships and wellbeing. It is not about suppressing anger or pretending it does not exist. Anger often signals that something important to you, a boundary, a value or a need, has been crossed. This programme teaches you to hear that signal clearly and act on it in a way you will not regret later, rather than reacting on autopilot.
Signs to notice
- Feeling your body heat up, jaw clench or heart race quickly when frustrated
- Saying or doing things in anger that you later regret
- Others describing you as short-tempered or walking on eggshells around you
- Struggling to calm down once you are angry, even hours later
- Using anger to avoid other feelings, such as hurt, fear or shame
- Anger showing up as silence, sarcasm or withdrawal rather than open conflict
What helps
- Learning your personal early warning signs so you can act before anger escalates
- Practising a pause, such as counting to ten or stepping away, before responding
- Using slow, deep breathing to calm the body's stress response in the moment
- Identifying the need or value underneath the anger, and expressing it directly and calmly
- Using calm, direct language that names your feeling instead of blame or accusation
- Building regular outlets for tension, such as exercise, that are not the moment of conflict itself
- Reflecting afterwards on what triggered the anger and what you could try differently next time
When to reach out for help
Seek professional support if anger is affecting your relationships, work performance or physical health, if you have hurt someone or damaged property when angry, if you feel frightened by the intensity of your own reactions, or if anger is connected to underlying stress, trauma or substance use. A professional can assess what is driving the anger and work with you on it safely and privately. If your anger, or someone else's, has ever put you or another person in physical danger, please treat that as urgent.
