Mindfulness is a skill, not a personality trait, and like any skill it gets stronger with steady, guided practice. This eight-session course is designed to teach it from the ground up.

What it is

Mindfulness foundations is an eight-session course that introduces the core practices of mindfulness in a gentle, structured way. Mindfulness means paying attention to the present moment, on purpose, without judging what you notice. Each session builds on the last, moving from short breathing awareness exercises in the early weeks to body scans, mindful movement and working with difficult thoughts or emotions later on. No experience is needed, and you do not need to be able to clear your mind completely or sit still for long periods. It is simply practice in noticing what is happening, right now, with a bit more kindness towards yourself.

Signs to notice

  • A busy, racing mind that struggles to settle, especially at night
  • Feeling disconnected from your body or constantly on autopilot
  • Reacting quickly to stress rather than pausing to respond
  • Difficulty enjoying the present moment because you are always thinking ahead or replaying the past
  • Curiosity about meditation or mindfulness but not knowing where to start
  • Wanting a structured, low-pressure way to build a calmer daily routine

What helps

  • Committing to short, regular practice, even five to ten minutes a day, rather than long occasional sessions
  • Starting with breath awareness before moving on to more advanced practices
  • Using guided audio in the early weeks so you are not left to figure it out alone
  • Noticing wandering thoughts without frustration, and gently returning attention to the present
  • Bringing mindfulness into daily tasks, such as eating, walking or washing dishes, not only formal sitting practice
  • Being patient with an unsettled mind; restlessness is normal and part of the process, not a sign you are doing it wrong
  • Reflecting after each session on what you noticed, without judging the experience as good or bad

When to reach out for help

Mindfulness can ease everyday stress and support wellbeing, but it is not designed to treat depression, trauma or acute anxiety on its own. If you find that sitting with your thoughts brings up distressing memories, overwhelming emotion, or worsening anxiety, pause the practice and speak to a counsellor rather than pushing through alone. Mindfulness works best alongside professional support when things feel heavy, not as a replacement for it.
