Music and the spirit

Music can lift, soothe and connect us, making it a powerful and accessible support for mental wellbeing.

Few things move us quite like music. A single song can bring back a memory, lift a heavy mood, or simply help us feel less alone.

What it is

Music affects the brain and body in powerful ways, it can calm the nervous system, lift mood, and even help process difficult emotions that are hard to put into words. Across South African cultures, music has long been part of healing, worship, celebration and mourning, from hymns and gospel to jazz, choral singing, drumming and traditional song. Music is not just entertainment, it can be a genuine tool for emotional regulation and connection.

Signs it might help you

  • Feeling emotionally "stuck" or unable to express what you are going through.
  • Low energy or motivation that music has previously helped shift.
  • A longing for connection to culture, community or memory.
  • Stress or anxiety that feels hard to calm through talking alone.

What helps

  • Create a playlist for different moods, calming songs for anxious moments, uplifting songs for low energy, and reflective songs for processing emotion.
  • Sing or hum along, even if it is only in the shower or the car, this can release tension in the body.
  • Attend a choir, church service or community singing event if that is meaningful to you.
  • Play an instrument, or simply tap rhythms, drumming and rhythm can be especially grounding.
  • Use music intentionally before stressful moments, such as a calming song before a difficult meeting or conversation.
  • Let yourself cry or feel deeply while listening if you need to, music can be a safe way to process emotion.
  • Share music with others, sending a song to a friend can be a simple way to say "I am thinking of you" or "I understand".

When to reach out for help

If low mood, stress or emotional numbness persist despite the things that usually help, including music, it is worth speaking to a professional. A professional can assess what additional support might be useful.
