Psychological first aid basics

Psychological First Aid is simple, human support you can offer anyone in distress - no training required.

Psychological First Aid (PFA) is the mental-health equivalent of basic first aid: simple, humane support for someone in distress after a crisis. You do not need to be a professional to offer it.

The three principles: Look, Listen, Link

  • Look - check for safety and urgent needs; notice who is distressed
  • Listen - approach calmly, listen without pressure, help them feel heard. Do not force them to talk or relive details
  • Link - help with practical needs (a call, water, a safe space) and connect them to support and loved ones

Do

  • Stay calm and present
  • Respect their culture, dignity and choices
  • Offer accurate, simple information
  • Reassure that their reactions are normal

Don't

  • Push for the story or details
  • Make promises you can't keep
  • Judge, rush or take over

After

Encourage rest, connection and routine. Suggest professional support if distress is severe or persists.
