Self-exclusion tools and how to use them
Self-exclusion is a practical, powerful tool - here is how it works and how to use it.
Self-exclusion lets you formally ban yourself from gambling with an operator or venue for a set period. It adds a barrier between the urge and the action - one of the most effective practical steps in recovery.
How it works
- Online: most licensed sites and apps have a self-exclusion setting (often under "responsible gambling" or account settings) - choose a period from months to years
- Venues: casinos and betting shops offer self-exclusion registers
- National register: South Africa's National Responsible Gambling Programme can guide you on excluding across operators
Make it stronger
- Pair it with deposit, time and loss limits
- Remove betting apps and saved cards
- Block gambling sites with a website blocker
- Tell a trusted person so you are supported, not alone
- Plan what you will do with the time and money instead
If the urge hits
Urges pass, usually within 15-30 minutes. Delay, distract, and reach out. Self-exclusion buys you that time.
