What problem gambling really is
Problem gambling is a recognised health condition - not a money problem or a lack of willpower.
Problem gambling (also called gambling disorder) is when gambling starts to harm your money, relationships, work or wellbeing - and you find it hard to stop even when you want to. It is a recognised health condition, not a moral failing or simple lack of discipline.
How it takes hold
Gambling triggers the brain's reward system in a similar way to some substances. Wins - and even near-misses - release dopamine, which keeps people coming back and chasing losses.
It is often hidden
Gambling harm leaves no smell or slur. People hide it out of shame, which lets it grow. Debt, secrecy, borrowing and stress are often the first visible signs.
The good news
It is very treatable. Self-exclusion tools, limits, counselling and support groups help thousands of South Africans recover.
First steps
- Be honest with yourself and one trusted person
- Use self-exclusion and deposit/time limits with operators
- Talk to a counsellor who understands gambling harm
