When to seek professional help

Reaching out early is a strength - here is how to know when, and where to start.

2 min read · Awareness resource · Reviewed 2026-09-15

Many people wait far too long to ask for help, hoping things will pass. Reaching out early is wise, not weak - and it usually means a shorter, easier recovery.

Signs it is time

  • Low mood, worry or stress most days for two weeks or more
  • It is affecting work, sleep, appetite or relationships
  • You are using alcohol, gambling or other things to cope
  • Friends or family have noticed a change
  • Any thoughts of harming yourself (reach out today)

What "help" can look like

Talking to a trusted person, a counsellor or psychologist, your GP or clinic, a support line, or your workplace EAP. You do not need a diagnosis to deserve support.

What to expect

A first session is a confidential conversation about what is going on. Nothing is forced. Together you decide next steps - which might be a few sessions, some skills, or a referral.
