Building psychological resilience
Resilience is not being unbreakable - it is bending, recovering and growing, and it can be built.
Resilience is not about never struggling. It is the ability to adapt, recover and keep going through hardship - and, importantly, it can be learned and strengthened like a muscle.
What builds it
- Connection - strong relationships are the single biggest protector
- A sense of purpose - values and goals that pull you forward
- Realistic thinking - facing problems without catastrophising
- Self-care basics - sleep, movement, rest
- Skills to manage emotion - breathing, grounding, asking for help
Everyday practices
- Keep routines during hard times - they steady the nervous system
- Break big problems into the next small step
- Notice what you can control and let go of what you cannot
- Reflect on times you coped before - you have done hard things
- Ask for support early; resilient people lean on others
A South African strength
Ubuntu - "I am because we are" - is resilience in action. Community, faith and shared meaning are powerful protectors here.
When to reach out
Resilience does not mean coping alone. If stress is stacking up, a counsellor can help you build a plan.
