Depression: signs, myths and recovery
Depression is more than sadness - it is a treatable health condition, and recovery is the norm.
Depression is not laziness or weakness, and it is not the same as feeling down for a day. It is a health condition that affects mood, energy, thinking and the body - and it is one of the most treatable conditions there is.
Signs that last two weeks or more
- Low mood or loss of interest in things you used to enjoy
- Tiredness, poor sleep or sleeping too much
- Changes in appetite, concentration or memory
- Feeling worthless, guilty or hopeless
- Thoughts that life is not worth living
Myths worth dropping
"Just think positive" and "others have it worse" do not cure depression, any more than they cure diabetes. It has real causes - stress, loss, genetics, health, circumstances - and real treatments.
What helps
- Small, regular actions - getting up, washing, a short walk - even when motivation is gone (this is called behavioural activation)
- Staying connected to one or two safe people
- Sunlight, movement and routine
- Professional support: talking therapy, and medication where needed
