What mental health is (and is not)

Mental health is about how we think, feel, cope and connect - and everyone has it, all the time.

Mental health is not just the absence of illness. It is how we think, feel, handle stress, relate to others and make choices. Like physical health, it moves up and down through life - and everyone has it, every day.

What it really means

Being mentally healthy does not mean being happy all the time. It means being able to cope with the normal ups and downs of life, work productively, and contribute to your community - even while facing difficulty. Struggling at times is human, not a weakness.

The continuum

Think of a line from thriving to struggling to in crisis. We all move along it depending on sleep, stress, relationships, money, health and support. Noticing where you are helps you act early.

What protects it

  • Sleep, movement and eating regularly
  • Connection - people you can be honest with
  • Purpose and small daily wins
  • Managing stress before it stacks up
  • Reaching out sooner rather than later

When to reach out

If low mood, worry or stress last more than two weeks, affect your work or relationships, or you are using alcohol or gambling to cope, that is a sign to talk to someone. Support is a strength, not a last resort.
