Napping: when it helps
When and how to nap effectively without it undermining your night-time sleep.
A well-timed nap can feel like a small reset button for your day. But a poorly timed one can leave you groggy or wide awake at midnight. Knowing the difference makes all the difference.
What it is
Napping is a short period of daytime sleep that can help restore alertness, mood and performance, particularly if you have not slept well the night before. Whether a nap helps or hinders depends largely on its length and timing.
Signs to notice
- Feeling a natural dip in energy in the early afternoon, which is a normal part of your body clock.
- Struggling to concentrate or feeling irritable by mid-afternoon.
- Waking from a nap feeling groggy and disorientated rather than refreshed.
- Finding it harder to fall asleep at night after a long or late afternoon nap.
- Using napping to cope with ongoing poor night-time sleep.
What helps
- Keep naps short, around twenty to thirty minutes, to avoid dropping into deep sleep, which is what causes grogginess on waking.
- Nap earlier in the day, ideally before mid-afternoon, so it does not interfere with your ability to fall asleep at night.
- Use napping strategically, such as before a night shift or after a poor night's sleep, rather than as a daily habit if your night sleep is otherwise healthy.
- If you are consistently needing naps to get through the day, this may be a sign your night-time sleep needs attention rather than just topping up with naps.
- Create a calm, dim space for napping if possible, similar to your usual sleep environment.
When to reach out for help
If you find yourself needing to nap every day just to function, or napping is not relieving your tiredness, it is worth exploring the underlying cause with a professional. This can include sleep disorders, stress, or other health conditions that deserve proper assessment.
